Interactive phase-out map: Light-duty vehicles

The map displays official phase-out targets set by national and sub-national governments with the aim to end the sale or registration of internal combustion engine (ICE) light-duty vehicles. Target dates and allowed vehicle technologies (battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles) are differentiated by color. Color coding may differ between the interactive map and the PDF map. We update these maps quarterly. (Current status: September 2022)

Around 22 governments have set ambitious 100% ICE light duty vehicle phaseout targets (either cars or vans, or both), by 2050 for new light duty vehicle sales and in some cases, stock. This map includes the countries, states, and provinces that have set targets to only allow the sale or registration of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Countries such as Japan with pledges that include hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) are excluded as these vehicles are non-plug-in hybrids.
