Electric vehicles market monitor for light-duty vehicles: China, Europe, United States, and India, 2022

This is the 2022 update of the Major Markets Electric Vehicle Monitor, which covers light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales in China, Europe, the United States, and India. These four markets were home to approximately 76% of global light-duty electric vehicle (EV) sales in 2022. Results show that China was the world’s largest EV market, both in terms of absolute sales of EVs, approximately 4.6 million, and EV share of new LDV sales, 24%. The 24% EV share was nearly double the EV share in China in 2021 (13.5%).

The absolute sales in all four regions are illustrated in the figure below. The figure also shows that while Europe and the United States saw a smaller share of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in 2022, 40% and 20% of the total EVs sold, respectively, the share of PHEVs increased slightly in China from 18% in 2021 to 22% in 2022. In all regions, battery electric vehicles were a larger share of the LDV market than PHEVs in 2022, same as in 2021.

The size of the bubbles in the chart represent EV sales in each of the four regions in both 2021 and 2022 and each bubble is shaded to show BEV and PHEV sales.
